What is Positive Sounds?

Positive Sounds is a programme aimed at Looked After Children aged between 6 – 24 in
Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. The program aims to improve the confidence and wellbeing of its
participants through a range of music making opportunities.

This project aims to give the children and young people who participate the opportunity to socialise
in an empowering and inclusive environment, accommodating the range of complex needs
presented. We use highly trained and experienced inspirational community musicians to use music
as a tool to enable the participants to have their voices heard, help improve their confidence and
develop their communication skills.

How it Works

The programme offers bespoke 1-2-1 online tuition in a variety of different musical forms. No
matter what ability or interest, this programme is unique to each young person. Focusing on the
musical elements they wish to explore, whether it’s singing or learning a new instrument, music
technology, composing for dance or film, music and art or anything else that is deemed to be
explored. 1-2-1 tuition is also supported through weekly live workshops at Darwin Hall (Litchfield).
Live sessions allow for group work currently for up to 15 people (including music leaders).

The pandemic has resulted in a vast amount of change in young people’s lives. It is more important
than ever that young people are presented with opportunities that they can use as a catalyst for the
rest of their lives.

We use highly trained and experienced inspirational community musicians to use music as a tool to enable the participants have their voices heard, help improve their confidence and develop their communication skills.

“Out of everything we do in the week, this is by far one of the best things we come to for these children’s personal development.” Carer of the participants at the music club.

This programme has been made possible thanks to funding from BBC Children in Need.
